MARK WESTHENRY

Though I first got to know Mark through his music at DTPM and Fiction, it seems he's been involved in the London club scene for 15 years, starting at Happenings, United Frequencies of Dance and Culture Shock, followed by an 8-year 'legacy' with Ministry of Sound. His style, similar to DJ's such as Roger Sanchez, Little Louie Vega and Jazzy M - Mark's words, not mine, as I've only heard Roger and Mark play live - reflects Mark's passion for music, and led to production in partnership with the likes of Ruanne Emennes (as The Lost Nights) for a remix of Kym Marsh (who?), and with S-J, on a new sound mixing house beats with jazz standards from 40s & 50s, such as the Nina Simone classic “Feeling Good” - I've read this a few times now, and I'm gagging to actually hear it! Residencies have included As One and The Whitehouse, with guest slots at Pacha London and City Loud, and in Ibiza for Ministry of Sound at Pacha, on the Space Terrace, and the MoS Radio shows. Mark’s tours have included sets at Queen in Paris, La Discoteca in Barcelona, Ku Club in Benidorm, Estasis in Italy, Scarlett in Zurich, Off Set in Switzerland, Macumba in Madrid and 02 in Porto, plus dates in Spain and Russia, and for MTV’s parties around the world. He routinely submits mixes and hosts live shows on MoS Radio. In June 2004, when Mark played for DTPM at Brazil’s São Paulo Pride, and the after-party at Ultralounge, he met and played alongside DJ Steven Black.

Following Steven's return to London after a year in Brazil, I heard nothing but good things about Mark Westhenry, and through Steven I finally got to meet Mark in person, and found out what a cool guy he is for myself.

Having heard endlessly about how fantastic they both were at the São Paulo gig, it was only a matter of time before they were asked to work together again, which they did with the launch of Fly at the La Troya Asesina London event in June 2005, Mark also playing for La Troya immediately before DJ Oliver.

People used to Mark playing a certain sound at DTPM, and a different sound at Fiction, were left in awe at his La Troya set that night, and subsequent closing set for Fly. Catch him at DTPM and Fiction most weeks, and look out for him when Fly returns to London later this year.
