Saturday 3rd July 2004Finsbury Park, London

A one-off party in the park - Finsbury Park to be precise - to give the thousands of extra homosexuals pouring into London for Gay Pride on 3rd July something to do in between being proud, and getting trashed at the many overcrowded clubs that night! What's not to get excited about?
Okay, so it wasn't high on my list of priorities for a cold, damp Saturday in July, but having got my laundry out of the way, and with Wimbledon over for the day, I gave it a go...
Turns out it was a pretty good event. Very good music coming from the (overcrowded, as always) dance tents, a funfair, plunge pools (they'd have made more sense if London hadn't been experiencing a Siberian summer), the usual array of dodgy burger stalls ("veggie-burger dahlin'? Just take that thing with the tail and the whiskers outta the bun"), and one truly fantastic stage performance to cap off a succession of top pop acts and Peter Andre.
Don't know if they had the predicted 35,000 partygoers, but there was little to complain about from the organisation in the park, or the quality of the show. Only next year, maybe the authorities could be a little less anal about a potential five-minute over-run to the festivities? Or the organisers could make sure the show ends at least 10-15 minutes before the party's over, as unfortunately it looked like we missed one of the best-choreographed club performances this side of Manumission!
Two fingers to the authorities, thumbs up to the organisers of Big Gay Out!
